Catherine ‘Irene’ Telban was born May 7, 1904 at the family farm in Hackett, Pennsylvania and died November 27, 2002 in Hackett, Pennsylvania.
Catherine never married and had no children.
Catherine attended Peters Twp. High School for two years, transferring to Washington High School, where she graduated. In 1921, she entered California Normal School, California, Pennsylvania graduating in 1923. Then she enrolled at Curry Business College, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Upon graduating, she was asked to stay and become a teacher. During the seven years that she taught there, the school merged and became Duff’s Iron City College, with the enrollment of 3,000 students. Seven more years were spent at Venetia Grade School. The first year teaching first grade and six years teaching the upper grades in English and Reading. While teaching there, she was attending night school at Duquesne University, graduating in 1942. Then for the next 26 years, she taught Business Administration at Snowden High School (later to be called South Park). Upon retirement, she had taught a total of 40 years.
Her travels have included every state in the U.S., including Alaska and Hawaii, except North Dakota. The Canadian Provinces of Quebec, Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia, including the Canadain Rockies. Four visits to Yugoslavia, plus England, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Israel and Liechtenstein, Monaco and a cruise to Bermuda. Also a side trip to the Artic Circle.
She was a Charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary in 1934, Finleyville. Also a member of the Peters Twp. Historical Society, St. Francis Church Ladies’ Guild, Pennsylvania State Educational Association and the National Education Association.
